To ensure there are a significant number of female “geeks” for the future girls in schools are been targeted.

Below is an article by the Independent that tells how this is being achieved.

“On International Woman’s Day, campaigning technology agency Lady Geek took over two London girls’ schools to show pupils from Year 7 and 8 what a career in technology looks like, using inspiring speakers, coding and games-design workshops… as well as prizes such as Xbox 360s and Raspberry Pis for the girls who produced the best work. Called Little Miss Geek, these workshops are the brainchild of Lady Geek CEO Belinda Parmar who is passionate about encouraging more women to look for roles within technology – and believes that the way to do this is to start young…”

The event kicked off with speeches from STEM industry experts Shuvo Saha, Industry Leader of Google UK, and Dr Tony Sewell, Founder and Director of Generating Genius, both of whom spoke passionately about this prestigious organisation’s support for students wishing to pursue an education in STEM-related subjects.

The audience also heard from James Marsden, a civil engineer at EDF Energy, who expressed his support for STEM6’s vision to bridge the gap between academia and the world of work and highlighted the increasing demand for graduates in STEM-related industries.

STEM6’s new Principal Designate, John O’Shea, also spoke at the event, outlining his ambition to make STEM6 one of the best post-16 educational providers in the Capital. Speaking after the event, O’Shea said:

“I was delighted to see the venue packed with so many students who clearly had a strong passion for STEM subjects. I was also really impressed with the quality of the students that expressed an interest in studying at STEM6 and I look forward to working with students from across London to help them to realise their full potential.”

Virginie Ramond, Lead Proposer of STEM Academy and Chief Executive of S&DA, added:

“We were thrilled to see the huge turnout for the event, proving the significant demand for a specialist academy amongst students in Hackney, Islington and London more widely. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Google for hosting the event and allowing us to showcase the life changing opportunities on offer through a STEM6 education.”

After the speeches, prospective students were treated to dance performances by The Movement Factory, a dance troop charity based in London, in order to highlight the extracurricular activities on offer at STEM6. There was also an opportunity to interact with STEM industry representatives, including engineering company Arup and Steve Thomas of Physical Computing, who held a robotics display, illustrating the innovation and creativity that will be part of the STEM6 experience.

Prospective students also met Governors of the Academy, members from the Department for Education and Mayor’s office, alongside representatives from Industry and from Imperial College, Goldsmiths and East of London Universities.

STEM6 is due to open in September 2013 and will be located at 263-269 City Road in EC1, off Tech City’s Silicon Roundabout, subject to entering into a Funding Agreement with the Secretary of State for Education and receiving planning permission for change of use and modification.

STEM6 will open its doors to students in September 2013, subject to entering into a Funding Agreement with the Secretary of State for Education and receiving planning permission for change of use and modification, and will offer a unique academic and vocational opportunity to students with a passion for STEM subjects from local communities in Hackney and Islington, as well as those from across London.

Last month, STEM6 announced the appointment of its new Principal Designate, John O’Shea, who is moving over from his current role as Principal of the highly-regarded Islington Sixth Form Consortium (IC6). Commenting on the new location, O’Shea said:

“Securing the City Road site for STEM6 is a hugely exciting development. The STEM6 vision has always involved being located in East London’s Tech City, creating a direct link with STEM industries and helping to inspire the next generation of STEM graduates. Tech City already represents one of the fastest growing and burgeoning areas of London and I’m confident that our students will thrive from being at the heart of it. I am truly excited by the opportunity to develop STEM6 into the best STEM sixth form in the country, and this announcement brings us one step closer to that goal.”
